DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Episode 505: “A Head of Her Time”

The Legends visit Versailles this week…during the French Revolution, which is the worst possible time to visit Versailles. Except it’s not the situation one would expect during this time period, but I’ll get to that in a minute. This week’s mission is to go after yet another encore in the form of the infamous Marie Antoinette.

Ava is in charge of the Legends as Sara heads to Star City to do…something? Something Arrowverse related, perhaps? Of course, Ava is a nervous wreck over all these responsibilities and has been ever since the Time Bureau got the ax. But hey, I’ll be the first to say Ava shined this week as interim Captain, and I loved every minute of it, especially her team-up with the new and slightly improved Zari.

As they arrive at Versailles, Ava isn’t too keen on letting Zari join them, but it’s a good thing she did because she’s the most useful one of the bunch. Who knew that Zari 2.0, obsessed with social media and partying, would come in clutch during the French Revolution?

Once inside Versailles, things don’t seem like they should. There was supposed to be a bit more anguish and pain, but instead, everyone is partying. And better yet, Marie Antoinette looks exactly like Nora. What the what is going on here?

Well, it gets weird, but in the most hilarious way possible. This is why I love DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. It’s the most laid-back show in the Arrowverse and rarely disappoints. There’s always something to enjoy and laugh about, and this week is no exception.

Ava and Zari soon get to the bottom of the partying: Marie has used magic to make everyone party…to death. Literally, people are collapsing all around them because they are under some spell and simply can’t stop having a good time. Everyone but Ava and Zari are affected. Why is that?

Well, it turns out Marie is using a fragrance to put people under her spell. The reason why Zari and Ava aren’t affected is because of Zari’s perfume, Dragonesque. It affects people’s ability to smell, and both of them had a sniff of it before coming to Versailles. Since they couldn’t smell anything, they weren’t affected by Marie’s spray.

This revelation doesn’t bode well for Zari’s future, where her fragrance gets a bad reputation, and she becomes a failure. She gets a good look at this future by forcing Gideon to show her.

Determined to make people love her, she takes Marie’s perfume to the launch. Things go sideways there too but the Legends show up to save the day, as per usual. Then comes my favorite part of the episode: Zari has rapid flashbacks of her past life just as she bites into a doughnut. What does this all mean? We’re not sure yet, but I’m super excited about it! I think a version of new and old Zari mixed together is precisely what we need!

Going back to the Versailles storyline, Zari tries to sneak Marie out of the party by telling her there’s another party. This plan doesn’t go well, and everyone at the current party decides to join. What follows is a hilarious run to the Waverider during which Marie loses her head (it was bound to happen). With severed head and body, Marie is brought onto the ship, and we are privy to a hilarious showdown between her body, Mick and Ray. Who knew a body without a head fighting two men would be so hilarious?

There’s also a storyline with Constantine, but I don’t get its relevance. I love his character, but it feels like he’s wasted doing whatever he’s doing with Astra. All I got out of the episode was that Astra does something that puts Constantine in danger, leaving him to fight for his life.

Grade: B+

That’s a wrap on the Arrowverse shows for the week. There was quite a bit of buzz around Sue Dearbon finally appearing on The Flash, and I think we’re all excited to see where her and Ralph’s story goes.

And of course, Kate’s left in a rather awkward situation at the end of Batwoman, so that’s going to be an interesting angle to follow up on next week. Not sure Kate is ready to face the awkwardness, though.

Until next week, Arrowverse fam!
