Some treasures take a long time to unearth — and that certainly seems to be the case with Sony’s upcoming adaptation of Uncharted. Based on the hit video game series by Naughty Dog, Uncharted follows the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he travels the globe seeking out everything from El Dorado to lost troves of pirate booty. The games were highly acclaimed at the time of their release for taking an incredibly cinematic approach that left the characters much better developed than the average gaming fare, which made it a given that they would translate well to movies.

Sony seemed to agree…all the way back to 2009, when the film was first announced. Uncharted has had a shocking seven directors attached to it at various points since then, as it languished in development hell and left many fans wondering if they would ever see Nathan Drake on the big screen.

But now, at last, word has come through that Uncharted will begin filming in Berlin in four weeks. The news came via IGN, which spoke with star Tom Holland at the premiere for his new Disney Pixar movie Onward. Check it out:

The movie also stars Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Seeing as how both Holland and Wahlberg are much younger than their video game counterparts, it makes complete sense that the Uncharted an origin story, perhaps detailing how a young Nathan Drake comes to meet his mentor.

Those hints that Holland dropped about how the movie will be drawing from the fourth game are mighty interesting as well. It’s a choice which makes complete sense given that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End heavily features flashbacks to Nathan Drake’s childhood to illustrate the dynamic between him and his brother Sam. Whether Sam will feature in the movie hasn’t been announced yet, but no matter how Sony chooses to spin things, it’s pretty exciting to at last have a clear glimmer of hope that this movie is actually going to happen.

Uncharted is scheduled to land in theaters on March 5, 2021.
