The Mandalorian season 2 will have “epic lightsaber action”
By Dan Selcke
The first season of The Mandalorian featured a lightsaber, but only at the very end, when the villainous Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) slashed his way out of his fallen TIE fighter with the Darksaber, a legendary weapon that first appeared on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Where did an Imperial scoundrel like Gideon pick up such a weapon? We don’t know, but it sounds like we’re going to find out come season 2.
Or at least, he’ll be using it a lot more. “The prop guys are wondering about me because I was in a bit of a commotion and a bit of a struggle with someone else, which I’m hoping you will enjoy when you see it,” Esposito told Mandalorian fans at FAN EXPO Vancouver earlier this month. “Major, major, epic, epic lightsaber action happening on this show, and I should mention that I’m the only character in this first season who was able to be honored with having that lightsaber. So it feels wonderful.”
So Gideon will get into “a bit of a struggle” (I’m hoping that’s an understatement) and use the Darksaber. Is this a lightsaber-vs-lightsaber fight, and if so, who’s wielding the other blade? Might it be The Mandalorian himself, Din Djarin? Or maybe Baby Yoda could levitate a light saber in the air?
Esposito doesn’t hold with those theories:
"Well, no way. [Laughs]. It ain’t gonna happen, baby! Anything is possible, and you keep watching. Because although the baby has some incredible power, without having to wield the Darksaber, I think the baby is so curious about what this is. So you will be enthused and inspired when you see the scene I’m referring to in Season 2, which is to come in October. Keep watching."
First of all, I commend Esposito on his hypes-man-ship — slipping the release date in there all subtle-like; Disney would be proud.
Second, it makes sense that the Mandalorian wouldn’t fight with a lightsaber; he’s more of a blaster guy. But it makes you wonder about what path Moff Gideon will take through season 2, and who he’ll fight on his quest to capture Baby Yoda. Hopefully he won’t kill anyone we know; I already hate the guy enough already.
As Esposito so craftily mentioned, the second season of The Mandalorian comes out this October, on Disney+.
