In a recent interview, actor Ty Tennant confirmed that he certainly wouldn’t object to starring in Doctor Who one day, as both his father and grandfather have done.

To say that 17-year-old actor Ty Tennant comes from a Doctor Who family is a bit of an understatement. As you can probably guess from his surname, he’s the son of David Tennant (best known to fans as the Tenth Doctor) and Georgia Tennant (who played the Doctor’s daughter Jenny). On top of that, his grandfather is Peter Davison, the iconic Fifth Doctor.

So it’s unsurprising that, along with heading into the acting business himself, he’s also heading into sci-fi territory with Fox’s adaptation of HG Wells’s classic novel, War of the Worlds. (Not to be confused with the BBC’s own adaptation that aired last year.)

It’s also unsurprising that, even when promoting another series entirely, he’d be asked about Doctor Who. And of course, that’s what happened during an interview with The Sunday Post. When asked if he would ever like to take on the role of the Doctor himself one day, here’s what he had to say:

"I don’t think I would ever decline the offer. Doctor Who is such a massive thing to take on. Whoever is truly right for it will get the role. If I am granted that, I will certainly do my best."

An actor himself, Ty is finding roles in sci-fi already, appearing Fox’s adaptation of War of the Worlds.

More from Winter is Coming

Early days

This is something I’ve seen as a headline for the past couple of days – that Ty Tennant wants to play the Doctor one day. And sure, that’s admittedly a good headline.

But it’s also important to remember that he’s just starting out as an actor. He’s getting success, don’t get me wrong, and I’m eager to see him in War of the Worlds. But even he acknowledges that it’s early days at the moment.

"I’m still early in my career. Just auditioning for stuff – but it’s exciting. I love acting. It’s nice to play around and fantasize about being different people and playing different roles. There’s no limit to what you can do."

It’s clear that he has a love of acting, and coming from a successful family of actors, he definitely could go on to have plenty of success. I don’t imagine him actively pursuing the role of the Doctor any time soon, even in the next few years – it is a huge role to take on, after all, and I’m sure he’d want to establish himself more in general first. But it admittedly would be fantastic if, one day, he takes on his father’s and grandfather’s legacy and gets to give his own take on one of Britain’s most iconic roles.

For the moment, you can see Ty Tennant in War of the Worlds on Epix in the US.
