Illustrating fantasy buildings: Game of Thrones and beyond

facebooktwitterreddit

Winterfell, Casterly Rock, The Eyrie, Harrenhal…over the course of Game of Thrones, we saw our fair share of iconic, imaginary buildings, impressive on the show and even more so in the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin. Is it terribly realistic for there to a be a medieval castle built on a series of islands jutting straight out of the water, like the castle of Pyke on the Iron Islands? Not really, but it does make for a fantastic visual, and fires the imagination, which is what we want from stories.

Angie’s List is paying tribute to these fantastical structures with a series of illustrations of buildings from Game of Thrones beyond. Take a look below, and let your mind wander:

Still kinda wanna live in Howl’s Moving Castle.

Anyway, I hope the calm black-and-white sketch strokes have gentled your spirit. I’ll be checking back in a while to see what Angie’s List comes up with when The Wheel of Time comes out and introduces us to a whole new world of fantasy architecture.
