The current season of The Magicians is its last one

The Magicians is cancelled. Well, basically. Creators John McNamara and Sera Gamble didn’t know that that the current fifth season would be the show’s last when they started making it, but they did write the last episode to serve as a series finale if it had to, according to Deadline. Well, now it has to.

The Magicians, based on the novel series by Lev Grossman, has been a top performer for SyFy since it debuted in 2015. The show follows a bunch of magically characters who attend Brakebills University, a magic collage. It’s a little like Harry Potter, but everyone is older and there’s more sex.

That said, the show went to some pretty far-flung places over the course of its run, but the ratings, while still healthy, were never what they were in the first two seasons. That combined with rising costs may have led to this decision.

The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons,” SyFy said in a statement. “As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”

Van Helsing, another SyFy show that’s been running for five seasons, is also ending this year. Of series that have been around for a while, only Wynonna Earp is left. That said, the network does have several new shows in the pipeline, including Vagrant QueenResident Alien, Chucky, Day of the Dead and The Surrealtor.

Goodbye, The Magicians! It’s been magical.
