Two Doctor Who companions may leave the show…for now

The Doctor may be losing two of her companions after the upcoming holiday special. I am not ashamed to admit that this completely and utterly breaks my heart. I have loved the “more than one companion” route the series has taken since Jodie Whittaker became the Doctor in season 11. But Doctor Who is nothing if not a series that adapts to change.

According to RadioTimes.com, Bradley Walsh (Graham) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) may be stepping away from the series for the time being. Nothing has been officially confirmed by BBC as of yet, but reports like this have been circulating for a while. And you know what they say about smoke and fire.

This year’s Doctor Who holiday special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” may be the last time we see Ryan and Graham, at least for a while. Per RadioTimes, the characters would cycle off the series, but could still make appearances later.

This wouldn’t be the first time Doctor Who characters transition into recurring roles. That’s basically what’s happened with John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness and Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones. So maybe Graham and Ryan go back to civilian life for a while following the coming conflict with the Daleks but still pop up when needed. Honestly, I hope this whole thing is a made-up rumor that never comes to pass.

Whatever happens in “Revolution of the Daleks,” we won’t really get a taste of the new status quo on Doctor Who until season 13, which is likely filming late this year. At that point in time, perhaps more information, more official information may become available to us.

In any case, it’s true that both Walsh and Cole are working on other things. Cole is starring in a courtroom drama series called 61st Street, while Walsh appears on shows like Chase and Cash Trapped. With the pair being so busy, perhaps there’s truth to these rumors.

If you’ve been paying close attention to the recent season of Doctor Who, there have been moments where Ryan has questioned the future. How long will they be able to travel with the Doctor like this? Is there not life after this? If this was setup for Ryan exiting the show, it wouldn’t be a shock.

But never fear, the Doctor will hopefully still have another companion in the form of Yaz (Mandip Gill). There doesn’t seem to be any hesitance of her part to return for another season! “I’d love to [come back],” Mandip said last month. “I’m just happy to have been part of two [series] and to have been able to explore Yaz. But I would love to be part of it.”

Looks like the Doctor Who fam may go through some changes, but in the end, it’ll get through it. It always does.
