Gina Torres to play Dracula’s wife in upcoming ABC series, The Brides
By Ariba Bhuvad
Genre superstar Gina Torres has had a long career, from playing an attorney on Suits (and on Pearson), the tough-as-nails Zoë Washburne on Firefly, the angry god Jasmine on Angel, and much more. Now, she taking on a wholly different beast, playing on of the leads ABC’s The Brides, about the paramours of Dracula, per Variety. Torres will share top billing with two other female leads, although we don’t know who they are yet.
We can completely see Torres as a vampire. She’ll be playing Cleo, one of Dracula’s three wives. Obviously, Cleo is the leader of the group, and has a rather interesting backstory:
"Cleo is described as an imperious woman with a queenly manner — understandably, as she was a queen in her former life, who was turned by Dracula after the death of her husband. Now a maven of New York City real estate, Cleo is challenged professionally by a mysterious newcomer, even as her ties to her sisters are dangerously fraying."
Oh, yeah, this show will be set in modern times. So don’t expect to see the brides depicted how they have been in past Dracula movies, where we don’t get much of a look at their internal lives:
The Brides kind of sounds like Tell Me A Story on CBS All Access, doesn’t it? A modern-day retelling of a classic tale. I loved Tell Me A Story, so I’m officially on board with The Brides!
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, a writer and producer on Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is taking charge of The Brides as a writer and executive producer, which is good news. Riverdale’s Maggie Kiley will direct the pilot and executive produce.
The wizards behind this entire production are, of course, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, who have a hand in Riverdale, Sabrina, the CW’s DC superhero shows…tons of stuff. This team hasn’t let us down yet, so I can’t imagine it happening now.
We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more details on this series. I’m super excited to see where this version of Dracula’s story takes us. Hopefully it can stand out at a time when Dracula stories are coming back into fashion, as for example miniseries from Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat on Netflix.
