It’s not long before Netflix begin filming its live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic series The Sandman, and it looks like they’ve found a worthy cinematographer.

Great cinematography will be key to making The Sandman TV show a success, as the graphic novels use some incredibly complex art by some of the top artists in the comic industry. If the showrunners intend to capture the complexity and emotion conveyed in the panels of the books, Netflix will need all the expertise it can get. According to Discussing Film, Netflix has hired former cinematographer George Steel to help bring the unique Sandman art to life.

Steel’s credits in television include some of the highest-rated shows from recent years, including Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, War and Peace, and The Son. But his fantastic work isn’t limited to television, as he’s also worked on movies like Gozo, Wild Rose and Robin Hood (2018).

If Netflix have signed on a cinematographer, and with filming set to begin this year, it can’t be long before we get some official casting news. We already know that casting is underway, as confirmed by Gaiman himself:

I’m interested to see who they cast in the titular role. There have already been so many names thrown around, including Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Fans also tweeted Neil Gaiman in their numbers to try and get him to play Dream, but the writer jokingly dismissed that idea:

There are plenty more actors than need to be cast. I’m most looking forward to seeing who gets to play the fan favorite role of Death, Dream’s sister. There’s some hard work to be done for the casting team, but in the meantime be sure to check out our dreamcast.

Netflix ordered an 11-episode first season of The Sandman last year. The premiere season will follow the first volume one of the graphic novel source material, “Preludes and Nocturnes,” plus a little more. David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, Blade) and creator Neil Gaiman will act as executive producers alongside Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy).
