Outlander stars discuss the bizarre Beardsley house

This past Sunday, Outlander gave us one of its weirdest, scariest episodes to date with “Free Will,” the third episode of the show’s fifth season. Claire and Jamie ventured into the Beardsley home, and things got weird. I’m not even sure where to begin with just how strange things were inside that house.

They found goats everywhere, a strange woman and her nearly dead husband lying in his own filth upstairs after having a stroke. Speaking to SYFY Wire, stars Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) reminisced on what making this odd hour was like.

Balfe remembers the stench of the goats, and how they relieved themselves every time shooting would begin. It wasn’t very hard to pull off looking disgusted, according to Balfe. Heughan agrees that it was “a very unsettling episode,” which barely covers the half of it.

Having said that, Balfe says she liked that the episode gave them the opportunity to do something different. “Free Will” definitely did bring out parts of Jamie and Claire we don’t always see.

Despite how strange and weird the episode was, it definitely stood out. I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon, especially since Jamie and Claire are left with Fanny Beardsley’s illegitimate child at the end.

What will happen next? I have no idea, but I’ll be watching. New episodes of Outlander air Sundays on Starz!
