Lost in Space returning to Netflix for third and final season
By Dan Selcke
Netflix had a cult hit with its Lost in Space series, a reboot of the 1965 series of the same name, which was itself a reimagining of the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson — see, remakes and reboots have been happening for ages. The story of the Robinson family and their companions — Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith, the Robot and Debbie the Chicken — trying to get to the Alpha Centauri star system struck a chord with audiences, but sometimes it wasn’t clear whether the show would continue. Well, it will…for one more year.
This is a “good news, bad news” kind of situation. The good news is that Lost in Space is returning in 2021 for a third season, which should wrap up the story. The bad news is that it’s also the final season. In a press release, showrunner Zack Estrin emphasized that the show is concluding on its own terms, rather than being cancelled mid-story.
“From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy,” Estrin explained. “A three-part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle, and end…So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.”
The show may be ending, but as Estrin implies, he has a development deal in place with Netflix, so it won’t be the last thing we get from his creative brain.
As for when the final episodes come out, all we know is that they’re coming sometime in 2021.
