Production on Stranger Things season 4 is currently underway, and as Deadline reports, the show is switching things up a bit by shooting scenes in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (Seasons 1-3 were filmed mainly in and around Atlanta, Georgia).

“Season 4 is bigger, bolder and more intricate than ever,” said Netflix VP Momita SenGupta. “So this is the first time the show will be traveling beyond Atlanta.”

Season 3 ended with everyone’s favorite curmudgeonly sheriff, Jim Hopper (David Harbour), seemingly meeting his end when a Russian laser used to open a rift to the Upside Down exploded beneath the Starcourt Mall in Hawkins, Indiana. Of course, we had our suspicions about whether he was really gone almost immediately, and Netflix quelled fans’ fears by showing him alive — if not entirely well — in a season 4 teaser:

So Hopper isn’t dead a mile beneath the ground. He’s working on a chain gang in Siberia. Will Albuquerque Studios — which Netflix purchased in 2018 — be where the team shoots scenes in Russia? “If I told you that, I would be disappearing into the Witness Protection Program,” SenGupta said.

Apparently, the state-of-the-art facilities in Albuquerque Studios “lent themselves to the story” being told in Stranger Things season 4, although we’ll have to wait to find out exactly what that means. With the season shootings now, a late 2020 release isn’t impossible, although we wouldn’t pin our hopes on it. With Priah Ferguson (Erica) now promoted to series regular, fingers crossed for an “Erica has been a Russian spy the whole time” origin story.
