Coronavirus measures delay production on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
By Corey Smith
The world is currently grappling with the outbreak of the coronavirus, and the entertainment industry hasn’t been spared. Movies have been delayed while theater chains shut now, and now, Deadline reports that Disney+ has halted production on a shoot for its upcoming Marvel series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The series will follow the Falcon, aka Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and the Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) as they attempt to fill the void left by Captain America (Chris Evans), who gifted his shield and title to Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The series was set to film scenes in Prague for a week until local government officials put the city on lockdown, cancelling school and instituting travel restrictions.
Now, this is just one filming location for the show — it already has a lot of stuff in the can. This delay doesn’t look like it’ll affect the August release date for the series. Production has returned to Atlanta for the moment, where the show has been shooting for the past several months. Given that the shoot in Prague was scheduled to run for less than a week, it appears unlikely production will return to the city; more likely the series will simply write out whatever scene was supposed to film there.
This marks the second occasion the show has been forced to adjust shooting, as January plans to film in Puerto Rico were cancelled after the island experienced a series of earthquakes. Those plans have also yet to be rescheduled.
It seems like everything’s getting cancelled or delayed by the coronavirus lately, doesn’t it? Just lately, SXSW was cancelled in Austin, the Emerald City Comic Con was called off, and now, word is coming in that the Electronics Entertainment Expo — the world’s foremost video game convention — won’t be going forward this year in Los Angeles.
Looks like it’s gonna be a year of holing up in our homes. Fun!
