Sony is making another Spider-Man spinoff movie

In a world where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is dominating the box office, Sony has its own (mostly) separate Spider-Man shared universe of movies going on. Now, according to an exclusive report by TheWrap, it appears Sony have enlisted the help of Spider-Man veteran Roberto Orci to write a mystery spinoff movie to help fill it out.

We have little to no details on this new movie, not even which character it will follow. It could be anything. Doctor Octopus bio-pic? Black Cat movie? Anyway, Sony believes Roberto Orci is the best choice to write it. Orci is no stranger to working with web-slinger, having written The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although many consider that movie to be the most disappointing of all Spidey’s big-screen outings.

Orci’s other major credits include the rebooted Star Trek movies, as well as two Transformers films: Transformers (2007) and Revenge of the Fallen (2009). As for the small screen, he was a part of the team of writers who worked on the hit Fox horror series, Fringe.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is technically separate from the MCU, with the company utilizing the rights to the many Spider-Man assets they hold. So far, the universe has spawned only one movie all its own: Ruben Fleischer’s Venom, which was slagged by critics but grossed a very respectable $856.1 million at the worldwide box office. This year, Sony will be releasing Morbius — another movie about a classic Spider-Man villain — with Jared Leto in the titular role. The movie is set to release July 31. And Tom Hardy is set to reprise his role as the classic antihero in Venom 2 this October!

Sony have a couple more Marvel-related projects in development. Last year, Collider reported that a Madame Web movie was in the works. And they’ve already announced a sequel to the immensely popular 2018 animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.

Basically, everything’s coming up Spider-Man these days. Have you noticed this shot from Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man movie making the rounds in the meme-o-verse?

Spider-Man is also planned to be a big part of Marvel’s Avengers Campus when it opens at Disneyland later this year…assuming the opening isn’t delayed by the Coronavirus, which is happening a lot right now.
