Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall racks up over a million pre-orders

At the end of the month, Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall — a free-to-play mobile game from Behaviour Interactive, GAEA and HBO — will debut on iOS platforms, although it’ll be available on Android the following week.

The game has you playing as the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, who steps into the job after your boss, Brynden “Bloodraven” Rivers, goes missing. You will gather units, plan strategies, and defend the Wall against attackers.

Honestly, that looks pretty fun. A strategy RPG is a pretty good for a Game of Thrones game. As you can see, you can also pick up “Hero” characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. It doesn’t make a ton of sense for people like them to be at the Wall years before they were born, but also…eh, I don’t think the game will be very plot-heavy. Also, you recruit them by using weirwood trees to travel to different points in the past and future of Westeros, which is a nice touch.

Each unit comes in multiple varieties, each with their own costumes and set of skills. For instance, Jon Snow: the Old Bear’s Steward can heal friends and enhance their attacks, while the King in the North does plentiful damage and boosts ally mobility and damage.

I think it all sounds fun, if silly, and it looks like the public agrees, as Phone Arena reports that pre-orders have already surpassed one million. In celebration, the game is giving away 10,000 copper coins to everyone who pre-ordered. If pre-orders crest 1.5 million, they’ll 10 Carved Glyphs. At 2 million, they get 90 shards of Jon Snow: The Old Bear’s Steward, which is enough to unlock him. And at 3 million, they get another 100 shards, which is enough to upgrade the character.

I’m kind of side-eyeing all that in-game currency, but I suppose that’s how free-to-play games work. Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall drops on iOS devices on March 26!
