George R.R. Martin reveals cover, artwork from A Storm of Swords illustrated edition

We’re still waiting on The Winds of Winter, but A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has kept his fans interested over the past few years with beautifully illustrated special editions of the earlier books his series. We’ve already gotten illustrated editions of A Game of Thrones

…and A Clash of Kings.

With those two books already under his belt, it was only a matter of time before we got an illustrated edition of A Storm of Swords, the action-packed third book in the series. And we have! A Storm of Swords: The Illustrated Edition will be out later this year, on November 3.

What’s more, Martin also debuted a gorgeous new piece of artwork from the book on Twitter. Check it out:

That looks like it’s from the early parts of the novel, when Daenerys is traveling to Astapor by ship with her dragons and Dothraki attendants. I love the sleeping handmaiden in the back. Clearly she’s used to hungry dragons by now.

The muted color palette of the picture is really cool, too. As Martin says, it’s almost “lithograph-like.” It comes from fantasy artist Gary Giani, who also did some illustrations for the illustrated edition of A Game of Thrones. We’re in good hands there.

In addition, we also have a look at the cover for the new book, which looks a lot like the covers for the illustrated editions of Game and Clash, but with different colors:

"(Spoilers ASOS) A Storm of Swords illustrated edition coming November 3, 2020 from asoiaf"

Red and purple, very regal. Anyway, if you’re interested, you can preorder the book here.
