Dan Fogler: Fantastic Beasts 3 is building to a “massive war”

Harry Potter may be intended for a younger audience, but that’s never stopped the original series or the Fantastic Beasts franchise from tackling more serious topics, like prejudice, political corruption, and even war. And according to Fantastic Beasts star Dan Fogler, war is exactly where the new film series is heading — but with the characters up against the threat of Grindelwald, that’s not all that surprising. Although we’ve only ever heard of Dumbledore’s triumph over the dark wizard, it stands to reason the time leading up to his demise would be as fraught as when Voldemort was at his most powerful.

In an interview with SYFY WIRE, Fogler, who plays Newt Scamander’s No-Maj friend Jacob Kowalski, spoke a bit about the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie, which will be the third installment in the series. Although the film’s production has been delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the cast and crew already have a pretty good idea of where the story is headed — and it looks like the stakes could get much higher.

“I can say I read the script and the character development is really lovely and it’s very similar to the feel of the first movie, which I think is great,” Fogler said. “It’s leading toward this massive war with the backdrop of World War II, so you can just imagine epic battle scenes are coming.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the film uses the historical backdrop to complement the tensions brewing in the Wizarding World. With three films to go, we’re also likely in for some exciting fight sequences — and fans can probably count on these movies to have more updated technology and a better budget than the previous ones.

It’ll also be interesting to see where Jacob’s character goes, especially given his connection to both the magical and non-magical world. Although things don’t look good for him and Queenie (Alison Sudol) — in fact, Fogler even says he gets into character listening to sad songs: “A lot of songs [are] about heartbreak, and that’s at the center of Jacob and Queenie’s relationship.”

Whatever happens, it looks like the characters from Fantastic Beasts have a lot to be worried about — which means the fans have more to look forward to, right?
