Loki will “struggle with identity” on his upcoming Disney+ show

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am so excited for Disney+’s Loki series. We may rarely be sure if Loki is a hero or a villain, or both, or neither, he’s always been one of the most intriguing characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s complicated and multi-layered, which might even make him more relatable than some of his super-brethren.

Not much is known about the Disney+ series, which has currently halted production due to the coronavirus pandemic. But what we do know is that the series picks up after Loki escapes with the Space Stone in Avengers: Endgame.

Loki showrunner Michael Waldron appeared on a recent episode of The Writers Panel and talked about how Loki will grapple with his identity throughout the series. Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What the heck does he actually want to be?

"I think it’s the struggle with identity, who you are, who you want to be. I’m really drawn to characters who are fighting for control. Certainly, you see that with Loki over the first 10 years of movies, he’s out of control at pivotal parts of his life, he was adopted and everything and that manifests itself through anger and spite towards his family."

If you’ve been a fan of the MCU from the start, you’ve seen Loki’s evolution. He’s not quite sure where he stands, and never really has. One minute he’s plotting against all mankind, and the next he’s sort of a hero in Thor: Ragnarok. I think this is why I’m so drawn in by the character, and it will hopefully make for an unpredictably enjoyable TV show.

Will Loki be able to resolve this tension? We’ll have to wait until the show premieres — hopefully sometime next year — to find out. In the meantime, all we have is this snippet of footage at the end of Disney’s Marvel Super Bowl teaser:

I’m definitely pumped to see where the story takes us, and to see Tom Hiddleston back in his element as the God of Mischief. Don’t you just love him in this role?
