Game of Thrones veteran auditions to play Death in The Sandman
By Ashley Hurst
A new audition tape has surfaced for Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman. So far, we’ve heard some casting rumors about characters like Dream and the Corinthian, but nothing too substantial. This might be the most interesting tidbit we’ve found so far!
Let’s start with what character the actor is auditioning for, because it’s exciting. What we look to have here is an audition tape for the role of Death of the Endless.
As her name implies, it’s Death’s job to end everyone’s life when their time has come. It’s grim work, but of all the Endless, Death is probably the most normal and down-to-earth; an easy-going, well-adjusted woman who just happens to wear a lot of black. She’s quite possibly the most popular of the Endless, so whoever plays her has their work cut out for them.
We don’t know who will ultimately play her, but in the audition tape, actor Rosabell Laurenti Sellers reads a selection from The Sandman Issue #8, “The Sound of Her Wings.” And if that name sounds familiar, it might because Sellers portrayed Tyene Sand on Game of Thrones. Tyene was one of the Sand Snakes, the one who tried to seduce Bronn while he was in Dorne, provided the antidote to her mother Ellaria Sand so they could murder Princess Myrcella, and who finally died in a dungeon under the Red Keep, after Cersei gave her a poison kiss of death.
Unfortunately, while the audition tape was viewable on Vimeo when we started in on this story, it’s now been set to private and is password protected. But we can still speculate about how Death will factor into the show.
“The Sound of Her Wings” is widely regarded by fans as one of the greatest issues in the entire series, and marks Death’s first appearance. In the issue, Dream rests after finishing his quest to recover the three items that were taken from him during his imprisonment: his bag of sand, a ruby, and his helm. Death turns up out of nowhere and talks to Dream, mocking him for moping around. He then accompanies her as she goes about her duties as one of the Endless.
I think it’s highly likely that this iconic issue will be adapted for the Netflix series. There has been some concern that Netflix would change things around for the show — already, Neil Gaiman has confirmed that they will bring the timeline forward to the modern day. It also looks like they may give the Corinthian, a nightmare creature from Dream’s realm, a bigger role.
Still, this is an exciting development. We’re guessing that production on The Sandman has stopped for the moment just like every other Netflix show, but at least we have the audiobook version of the comic to look forward to, which is set to release sometime this summer.
