AMC makes episodes of The Walking Dead, other shows available for free

Last week, HBO announced that it was making a selection of shows and movies available to stream on HBO Now or Go completely for free — no subscription fees, no need to create a profile, no nothing; just get to watching. Sure, they weren’t making some of their most popular content free to watch — Game of Thrones isn’t included in the offering — but easy accessibility to BarrySuccessionVeepThe Sopranos, and The Wire, getting through quarantine just got a little easier.

Now, other companies are following HBO’s lead…kind of. Deadline reports that AMC Networks — the company that runs AMC, BBC America, IFC, SundanceTV and Sundance Now — is making some of its shows free to watch, although things are more restrictive here. For example, you watch The Walking Dead for free on AMC.com…but only episodes from the first half of the current tenth season. And I see no indication that episodes of heavy hitters like Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad are available to watch for free. Although a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that back seasons of all three of those shows are currently available to watch on Netflix.

Likewise, BBC America is making some documentaries available to watch for free, but not major tentpoles like Planet Earth. And over at IFC, you can watch select episodes of stuff like Comedy Bang! Bang! and Mystery Science Theater 3000 for free, and so on.

Hey, so AMC isn’t making its entire back catalog available to watch free of charge. We’ll take whatever we can get during quarantine. And hopefully other content creators will follow the leads of places like HBO and AMC Networks and soon the entirety of entertainment will be at our fingertips.
