Doctor Who fans have been making the best of the isolation mandated by the current pandemic by revisiting some of the most iconic moments of the series. In fact, cast and crew from seasons past have been live-tweeting episode rewatches, and Whovians are here for it!
Emily Cook of Doctor Who Magazine has been spearheading a lot of these rewatches, which are taking place across the globe while people are stuck at home. But not only are we getting to experience old episodes as a community, but Cook has managed to get us some original content to go along with it. For example, current Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall wrote a short story about what happened as the 13th Doctor fell to Earth. Now, former showrunner Steven Moffat has written a story about Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), the 11th Doctor’s (Matt Smith) trusty companion. I still get all teary-eyed thinking about her entire arc on Doctor Who, so this was great to me.
What’s more, the story comes with animation by Sophie Iles, narrated by Caitlin Blackwood. Grab a tissue before you watch it, Whovians:
The short story came on the heels of a rewatch of “The Eleventh Hour,” and the live-tweet included by Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. This Doctor/companion duo was one of my favorites, and I was so excited to dive back into the start of this beautiful story that still resonates with me and so many other Whovians to this day.
Just in case it’s been a while since you’ve rewatched this episode, let me fill you in. The story of Amy Pond and the Doctor’s friendship began when Amy was just a little girl, and she needed his help with a crack in her wall. On the off-chance you haven’t seen this arc, I won’t reveal what that crack was, but it suffices to say that the Doctor helped little Amy, and then promised to come back. Amy waited and waited for his return, but it wasn’t until years later that he actually did.
The new animated short story retells this beautiful tale through the eyes of a young Amy Pond, who’s writing her thoughts out in a journal. I love all the references to Rory, who eventually becomes Amy’s fiancé. And the story mentions Amy’s friend Mels, who *drumroll* is actually Amy and Rory’s future daughter, River Song. So many memories packed into this thing!
I think all this talk of Amy, Rory and the Eleventh Doctor has convinced me to rewatch their entire arc from start to finish. Anyone with me?
And if that’s not a great way to get your spirits up, other Doctor Who fans are getting extremely creative. Watch below to see what I mean:
Yep, that’s a Dalek patrolling the streets of a village in the United Kingdom, screaming at people to stay indoors. “BY THE ORDER OF THE DALEKS, ALL HUMANS MUST SELF-ISOLATE!”
Oh, how I love being a part of this fandom. Thank you for trying to make the best of a difficult situation.
