Star Trek: Picard showrunner teases season 2 storylines

Star Trek: Picard season 1 ended with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) dying from a terminal illness, only to be brought back to life in the golem body of an android. Throughout the show’s inaugural season, the retired Starfleet admiral tracked down and rescued Data’s (Brent Spiner) daughter, Soji (Isa Briones), and when he safely returned her home, he found that Data — the lovable android from Star Trek: The Next Generation — had spawned an entire generation of sentient synthetics. Technically, Picard is now one of them.

And that could cause a problem, because season 1 focused a lot on the Federation’s hatred of synthetic life, after a group of the robots were blamed for destroying shipyards on Mars, snuffing out millions of lives. Eventually, it was revealed that the Zhat Vash — a branch of the Romulan secret police, the Tal Shiar — were responsible for the attack on Mars; they framed the androids hoping the Federation would destroy the synths and end the coming of a foretold apocalypse. Picard uncovered the truth, but the damage may already be done.

Will these kind of stories continue in season 2? Picard executive producer Michael Chabon answered some fan questions on via Instagram Stories after the season 1 finale and hinted at several possibilities.

A lot of the questions centered on Picard and his new android body.

The Ship of Theseus is a paradox about a mythical Greek ship that had all its planks replaced. Is it still the same ship if every part of it has been discarded and replaced? That’s probably a question Picard is asking himself about now: Is he the same man as before?

In season 1, Picard was beamed aboard a decommissioned Borg ship, which made him confront the time he been assimilated into the Borg Collective, receiving a new heart in the process. I’d think Picard has already had some Ship of Theseus thoughts because of that. In fact, you can actually see him questioning his reality when he enters the Borg Cube.

With a new synthetic body comes a longer life, right?

Seeing as how Picard used to be the captain of the USS Enterprise, fans wanted to know if the famous ship might be part of season 2:

Sounds like Chabon is side-stepping that question. Although to be fair, Picard has a new crew — or a group of friends who like to travel the galaxy together, anyway — and they use the La Sirena, so unless Chabon and the Picard showrunners are willing to introduce an all-new captain of the Enterprise, I’d guess that it won’t be in the second season…but you never know.

There were loads of questions about Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) possibly coming back for season 2.

Stepped into that one.

Seven did look pretty comfy in the final episode of Picard season 1, but Chabon isn’t giving away details.

Seven of Nine first appeared on Star Trek: Voyager, and Chabon made it seem like the captain of that ship  — Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) — is still alive and well during Picard’s timeline. There’s a possibility we could see Janeway is season 2, folks!

Expect more Andorians — blue-skinned aliens with antennae on their heads — in season 2:

Finally, Chabon confirmed that he’ll be back for Star Trek: Picard season 2, but as a writer and executive producer only.

I’m confident that with Chabon writing two episodes in season 2, it’s going to be as great as season 1.

Don’t expect Picard season 2 to get off the ground anytime soon, though, as the coronavirus pandemic has pushed back production. What else is new?

You can watch Star Trek: Picard season 1, in its entirety, on CBS All Access.

Next. Anson Mount would love to play Captain Pike again in his own Star Trek show. dark
