Until Monday next week, Doctor Who: The Beginning – an audio that reveals what happened when the First Doctor and Susan left Gallifrey – is available to download for free from Big Finish’s website.

Did you all make sure to download The Innocent last week? In case you missed it, until today, Big Finish Productions made the opening episode of Doctor Who: The War Doctor available for free. If you missed it, don’t worry: another story in their vast back catalogue is now available. And it’s a pretty big one.

In 2013, quite a few major Doctor Who stories were released. Not just on television, where we had fiftieth anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, but in other media, too. Along with books and comics, Big Finish Productions released a couple of headline-grabbing releases.

One was their own multi-Doctor special, The Light at the End, featuring all the surviving Doctors of the twentieth century. The other – with a much smaller cast – was simply called… The Beginning.

As well as The Beginning being currently available for free, The First Doctor Box Set is also on sale.

Early days

How much does The Beginning delve into the Doctor’s origins? Not too much. It’s not the beginning of the Doctor’s life on Gallifrey, (which as we now know, extends so much further back into its history than even the Doctor knew,) but the beginning of the Doctor’s travels.

Flying away in a capsule destined to take the form of a Police Telephone Box, the Doctor starts his journey with his granddaughter Susan traveling with him. Unfortunately, as they eventually discover, there’s someone else already onboard the ship when they take off…

Starring Carole Ann Ford as Susan and Terry Molloy as Quadrigger Stoyn (best known to fans for his many appearances as Davros), Doctor Who: The Beginning is now available to listen to completely for free from Big Finish’s website until Monday next week.

On top of that, right now, there’s also a sale on The Lost Stories: The First Doctor box set, now at 50% off. The first three volumes of Doctor Who – The Companion Chronicles: The First Doctor are also available in a download bundle for £36.
