Let’s break down the trailer for The Last Kingdom season 4, shot by shot
An axe sails though a window.
Archers unleash hell.
Aethelred and Eardwulf lead the Mercian cavalry across a field.
King Edward governs.
Aware of Uhtred’s torn loyalties, Sigtryggur asks him, “And why do you choose them (the Saxons)?”
“They are my people,” Uhtred responds. Has he finally chosen his Saxon side over his Danish side once and for all?
A sword is drawn from a cavalryman’s scabbard.
No one deals death on the battlefield like Uhtred.
Uhtred hammers the vile Haesten while Finan guffaws.
Uhtred slices and dices.
We’re waiting with bated breath!
A view from Bebbanburg.
Aelfric, murderer of Uhtred’s father and usurper of the seat of Bebbanburg, looks like he’s plotting again.
Shields clash!
An army departs its encampment.
Sigtryggur readies his troops, shouting, “When we fight, we fight with with one heart!”
Battering ram!
The smoldering aftermath before a stronghold gate.
And the hero is…
He needs no introduction.
The courageous Aethelflaed urges Uhtred on. “I know you will do what is right.”
An army advances.
A great shot of much of the Wessex-friendly cast: Father Pyrlig, Aldhelm, Aethelflaed, Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric and Osferth behind him. They look war-ready.
A sprawling battlefield.
Uhtred, blood spattered, shouts “Stop them!” in the midst of the mayhem.
Uhtred downs an opponent.
Uhtred can never escape his destiny.
Uhtred leads riders up a hill. “Where does it come from, this courage?” a voice asks.
More smoldering battle aftermath.
Sigtryggur leads his men.
A fabulous cavalry charge shot.
The charging cavalry run into a trap of hidden pits.
An aerial shot of the lead cavalry collapsing into the defensive trap line.
Looks like a Dane swinging a battle axe.
No battle sequence is complete without horses leaping through fire.
Difficult to make out, but this is perhaps a taking storm or battle damage.
Danish chest-pounding.
Eadith (Stefanie Martini) looks like she’s plotting.
King Edward on the battlefield.
Warriors charge the gates of Bebbanburg.
If this shot doesn’t scream how important the Uhtred/Aethelflaed relationship is in season 4, we don’t know what will.
