Following the monster success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Anthony and Joe Russo have become two of the most well-known creatives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in Hollywood as a whole. And although both Russo Brothers have moved on to other projects, they’ve often hinted that they’d be willing to return to the MCU if offered the right project — something fans of their films have been eager to get behind.
And it seems fans aren’t the only ones enthusiastic about keeping them around. According to Joe Russo, he and his brother stay in frequent contact with the major players at Marvel Studios, including Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios co-president Lou D’Esposito, and Marvel Studios executive Vice President of Production Victoria Alonso.
“They’re all your friends of ours,” Joe Russo told ComicBook.com, confirming that the Russos hear from their pals over at Marvel “all the time.” He added that they’ve been “texting, seeing how everyone’s doing. We get together with Lou for regular dinners once a month, and there’s always conversations going on. I think, you know, when we all land on with the right project is for us all to team back up on what, we’ll jump in feet first for sure.”
It’s understandable that the Russos would want a break from Marvel projects, particularly after putting together two large-scale films back to back. And we’re already seeing some of their other projects. The brothers recently produced the war drama Extraction, with a script by Joe, for Netflix. It stars Chris “Thor” Hemsworth as a grizzled mercenary:
Still, it’s good to hear they’re game to revisit the universe in the future — and who knows, perhaps they’ll tackle the franchise’s next massive undertaking, when the heroes from Phase 4 and 5 are inevitably forced to team up in an Avengers-style film. (At least we know they’d be up to the task.)
Until the “right project” arrives, however, Marvel fans have plenty of exciting projects to look forward to, from Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder to new kids on the block The Eternals, from director Chloé Zhao. There’s no shortage of impressive directors in this franchise, and we have no doubt they’ll build on one another’s stories and give the Russos plenty to work with whenever they do return.
