The Last Kingdom refresher: What you need to know before season 4

The Danes, Bebbanburg and all the rest
Cnut (Magnus Bruun): After tasting defeat last season, Cnut, the cleverest Viking we’ve seen in a long time, will surely regroup back at Dunholm in Northumbria alongside Brida. Brida and Cnut made an unlikely pair after Ragnar’s death, and Cnut’s hand in that event could prove his undoing. Or Uhtred’s sword could do the same. Either way, Bruun is looking forward to getting his hands dirty.
Brida (Emily Cox): Uhtred’s former lover and a new leader among the Danes, Brida is fanatical about killing Saxons and uprooting Christianity. Alongside Cnut, that shouldn’t change in season 4, unless she learns of the latter’s hand in Ragnar’s death. Either way, Brida is a force to fear, and one not to be counted out.

Haesten (Jeppe Beck Laursen): Haestan was defeated alongside Cnut and Brida at the end of season 3. But Haestan is a hard Dane to keep down, and we’re expecting him to rise to a position of prominence as the Danes campaign to take Wessex.

Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurdarson): Sigtryggr is a wild card. We know he’s a Dane and will face Uhtred in battle at some point, but we don’t see him aligned with Cnut or Haestan in the season 4 trailer. What that means remains to be seen, but a Dane not hellbent on Wessex’s destruction could prove a welcome change. Or he could head straight for WInchester and King Edward. We’ll see.

Aelfric (Joseph Millson): Uhtred’s dastardly uncle has ruled in Bebbanburg since usurping his nephew’s place in the series premiere, and we’ve only occasionally seen him since. That all looks to change in season 4, as Millson teased his return, along with improvements to Bebbanburg. Will they be enough to hold off Uhtred? Or will Uhtred finally gain the revenge he seeks?

Wihtgar (Ossian Perret): Not much is known about the warrior Wihtgar, including his loyalties. Perret revealed to us that Wihtgar is a bit of a pirate, and if we had to guess, we’d place him in the employ of Aelfric, putting him on a collision course with Uhtred.
