Uhtred tries to teach his son in new clip from The Last Kingdom season 4

The fourth season of The Last Kingdom drops on Netflix tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more excited! The medieval drama has been killing it for years, and it looks like this new season will be the most intense yet.

Netflix has definitely increased the budget for the show this year, but the heart of The Last Kingdom will always be the characters. In a new clip, lead character Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) bonds with his son, who’s also named Uhtred:

“I know what it is to be ripped from one life to live another,” Uhtred Sr. says. He’s not lying: Uhtred was born a Saxon but grew up a Dane after his home of Bebbanburg was attacked by Vikings. Is his son having a similar problem? It looks like he’s been raised as a Christian, which may not set comfortably with Uhtred, who is known to embrace his pagan roots from time to time. Conflict ahoy.

We’ve also gotten ahold of the episode descriptions for the new season. Everything is pretty vague, but still, if you’d rather go in completely clean, consider yourself warned. Check them out below:

  • Episode 1: Tensions have risen between Wessex and Mercia in the years after Alfred’s death. Uhtred believes that his destiny is finally within reach and the time is right to take back his ancestral home. But, new threats endanger the future of the Saxon kingdoms.
  • Episode 2: Healing family wounds, Uhtred journeys north, his ancestral home in his sights. The rift between Wessex and Mercia deepens, and Lord Aethelhelm pressures King Edward to make a decision that threatens to divide the Saxons, as well as his own family.
  • Episode 3: As the Danes take advantage of Saxon instability, Aethelflaed takes a bold course of resistance. Uhtred must decide whether love will drive him to fight for the Saxons. Meanwhile Lady Aelswith takes the lead in forging new alliances.
  • Episode 4: The Saxons and Danes prepare for conflict, but will Mercia and Wessex unite in time to secure their future? In a meeting of armies, Uhtred faces down old enemies and reveals their lies in an attempt to bring the conflict to its conclusion.
  • Episode 5: Resolved to unite with former allies, King Edward attempts to offer his support. But old wounds are not so easily healed. Aethelflaed finds herself persecuted and Uhtred takes matters into his own hands to ensure that innocent people are not harmed.
  • Episode 6: Separated from Aethelflaed and far from home, Uhtred is forced to pursue justice in order to return. Brida finds herself in horrifying circumstances. As King Edward’s challenges increase, he begins to question whether he has taken the right approach.
  • Episode 7: Edward makes Uhtred an offer that will resolve the turmoil in Mercia, but has huge ramifications for Uhtred personally. Aethelflaed finds comfort in her family and Aelswith begins to make peace with her past. Elsewhere, external forces collide to bring Brida new hope.
  • Episode 8: Uhtred makes the ultimate sacrifice for the future of Saxon unity, and it comes at great personal cost. Aethelflaed and Edward finally resolve their differences. But will there truly be peace for the Saxons?
  • Episode 9: Uhtred fears for his family. Aethelflaed enjoys success, but Edward realizes he has been distracted from an unknown enemy. He must cement fragile bonds to face down a terrible new threat – potentially jeopardizing the future of his Wessex stronghold.
  • Episode 10: The Danes and the Saxons look to a new future. And so must Uhtred. Having sacrificed his own happiness, he is presented with an unexpected mission and realizes, more than ever, that his destiny is entwined with Alfred’s dream of a united land.

Destiny is all.
