“Dark Rey” almost looked like this in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The ninth and final film in the Skywalker Saga — Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — will be digitally released on the Disney+ streaming service on Star Wars Day: Monday, May 4, quite a bit earlier than expected. The Rise of Skywalker saw Rey (Daisy Ridley) overcome her family’s dark past to emerge as the bastion of hope and a symbol for the Resistance: the literal last Jedi.

The Rise of Skywalker went through a lot of versions before we all finally saw it in theaters. Originally, the movie was going to be helmed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow. That movie, Duel of the Fates, was never made, although concept art survives.

Eventually, Lucasfilm brought back director J.J. Abrams — who also directed The Force Awakens — to helm the film, and the rest is very messy history. But just as concept art from Trevorrow’s version is still floating around, we also have unused stuff from the theatrical version of The Rise of Skywalker out there, including concept art of “Dark Rey.”

These three images come from concept artist Adam Brockbank, who worked on the movie. This first one recalls the scene from Revenge of the Sith where Anakin slaughters the younglings:

Next, we have this wicked-awesome art of Rey in some kind of red leather gown:

And finally, the pièce de résistance: Rey displaying Kylo Ren’s helmet as some sort of trophy:

Or at least that’s what I’m getting from it.

I absolutely love this art and kinda wish Rey would have actually Sith-ed out and gone dark just so we could have a moment like this. But alas…Rey Palpatine.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes home on Disney+ on May 4.
