Outlander season 5 penultimate episode teases war and chaos
By Ariba Bhuvad
Well, Outlander is just two episodes away from ending its fifth season–and I’m all in my feelings about it. I’m not ready to head into another Droughtlander, which will surely last longer than ones of the past. It’s imperative we soak in everything coming our way over the next two episodes because they might be our last for a long, long time.
STARZ has released the images for Sunday’s episode, “Journeycake,” which is written by Outlander author herself, Diana Gabaldon. And whenever she’s involved, the episode is likely to have a comedic touch to it. After all, we need a beat to laugh off the madness of everything that goes down in this show.
This week’s episode promo promises that things are about to get chaotic as heck. All season the prospect of war and chaos has been teased, and while we had a taste of it back during the Battle of Alamance, it’s about to get much, much worse.
This season’s biggest obstacle was always going to be the start of the American Revolutionary War. Of course, with all the time meddling and traveling, there are three individuals (Claire, Brianna, and Roger) privy to how this war is meant to go down. Along the way, Jamie has come to know some vital information, and it has me on the edge of my seat as to how his awareness could impact the future of the United States of America, and of course, everyone around him.
Speaking of Jamie, images from this week’s Outlander show him looking into a microscope while Claire tries to hide her amusement in the background. Is dear Jamie Fraser trying to understand the complicated science behind his wife’s penicillin? Fans of the novel series will know what this moment is all about–and for those that don’t, tune in on Sunday.

I’m always happy to see Lord John Grey in episodes and based on the images and the promo, he’ll be back just in time for the chaos that is about to rain down on everyone. But there is a bit of a complication here. Grey is on the side of the British, but his heart has always favored Jamie. This is going to be rather awkward and confusing for him, don’t you think? Plus, Jamie knows who comes out winning at the end of this, so there’s that.
Despite whatever has gone on in their lives, I’m always happy to see how they get along so splendidly. Jamie and John Grey’s friendship is one for the ages–and I hope it never falters.

The promo also reveals trouble for Jocasta’s man, Ulysses, who killed Neil Forbes after Forbes tries to take Jocasta’s life. Although he did it out of self-defense for his mistress, Ulysses is in a hell of a lot of trouble and will be convicted and likely executed for his actions.
Naturally, Jocasta will likely call on Jamie and Claire to help, as it appears from the promo and the images. Will they be able to keep him safe? Can they free him as a slave so he can obtain freedom elsewhere? Here’s to hoping–because we love Ulysses!

And then, of course, there’s the lingering topic of, what Brianna and Roger will do about traveling back to their time. I think Roger is definitely on board with that plan, especially after nearly being hanged and then dealing with the Stephen Bonnet mess.
For Brianna, it’s not so easy. This may not be her time but her entire family is here, and she’s made a life for herself. Novel fans know what is to come, but as always, Outlander the series manages to keep everyone on their toes.
Tune in on Sunday to see how things will begin to wrap up for Outlander season 5. I’m not ready for it. Are you?
