The Flash showrunner reflects on future of series

The Flash has been one of many television shows affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and as a result, will face a shortened sixth season. I have to say, I’m not sure where the story is headed anyway, so maybe it’s best to bring a halt to the madness that has been this entire season.

Honestly, they can probably wrap it up, and never look back and just focus on season 7 whenever they get back to work. But hey, that’s just me.

While on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, The Flash himself, Grant Gustin, spoke a bit about the chaos of how things have been lately — namely, contract renegotiations and such.

"The conversations actually had started already for adding a potential eighth and ninth [season], and then this pandemic happened, and everything has stopped. We don’t know when we’re, and I don’t know when we’re going to continue the renegotiation talks."

I mean, we know they’re coming back for a seventh season regardless, but it is curious that these talks have yet to take place for future seasons. As for now, Gustin is one for more season, per his contract, but I’m sure we won’t have to worry about him not returning. We can’t see DCTV go through the same cast changes the DCEU did with the movies.

The Flash’s showrunner, Eric Wallace, spoke to TVGuide, about the future of the series, despite everything being on hold right now. So hey, somebody is thinking ahead and giving some assurances.

"I have so many stories I am dying to tell on this show. It’s funny, I had a dream last night and in the dream, I might have just solved who the villain is and the entire arc for Barry, Iris, and the villain for Season 8, and dripping into Season 9. So, you know, I’m ready to go. I’ll do the show as long as The CW will give me the pleasure and privilege — and Warner Bros. too — of being able to have fun playing in this sandbox."

As far as the current season of The Flash goes, the “finale” will air on Tuesday, May 12th, with “Success is Assured”–a phrase we’ve been hearing over and over again through the mirror minions this season. While speaking to SYFY Wire, Wallace mentioned the remaining scripts for the final three unfilmed episodes are ready to go, but what will become of them, is yet to be seen.

"Don’t worry. The scripts are written. They just haven’t been shot. You will see on the other side of this pandemic, whenever we get a chance to film those episodes and put them together, you will see how all this comes together and how Barry finally gets his speed back in what I think is a really unique way … and it allows him to obviously beat the bad guy."

I haven’t been the biggest fan of The Flash’s sixth season (apart from its crossover episode), so I’m okay with things just wrapping up with the whole mirror dimension storyline. I am bummed, however, that it seems we won’t learn how Barry gets his speed back. It was the one thing I was looking forward to, but I guess I’ll have to just hang on a bit longer for that.
