Remember Twilight, the series of young adult vampire novels by Stephanie Meyer that were turned into a tremendously successful series of films about a decade back? They were criticized at the time for defanging vampires and for featuring some weird gender politics but were ultimately harmless fantasy nonsense? You remember.

Well, it’s been a while since we’ve heard any new Twilight news, but Meyer came today on Good Morning America, where she announced that a companion novel to the original book, Midnight Sun, will be released this summer.

The cover shows a rotting apple, which should help it fly off shelves:

Ugh, who wants to look at that whenever they close the book? I’m not sure I’d wanna touch it.

Edit: Nope, that’s a pomegranate, not a rotting apple, which means there’s even more reason to be afraid of it.

Anyway, Midnight Sun tells the story of the first book, but from the perspective of Edward Cullen, the sparkly vampire who falls for Bella Swan, a new student at the high school where he’s been going for the last few decades of his immortal life. God, he must be bored of trig.

“It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure if this was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so, so long,” Meyer said during her segment. “It didn’t seem fair to make you wait anymore. Sorry about the bad timing. Hopefully this book can be a distraction from the real world. I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with you.”

Believe it or not, fans have been waiting for this book since 2008, when Meyer first mentioned she was writing it. “There is so much more to his side of the story than there is to Bella’s in that first chapter,” Meyer wrote at the time. “His side of Bella’s first day at Forks High School is a hundred times more exciting than her own.”

That’s all well and good, but is anyone scratching their heads over how it took over a decade for this book to come out? I mean, the four original books came out yearly like clockwork, but a retread of an old story from a different perspective took over a decade to perfect? What happened there?

It’s probably beside the point. Midnight Sun will be released on August 4. Then stay tuned for Midday Moon, told from the perspective of the werewolf guy.

That last part’s a joke but you never know.
