Netflix drafts Incredible Hulk director for Bright 2

It looks like Netflix is stepping up development of Bright 2, a sequel to the highly divisive 2017 movie featuring Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, fairies, elves, orcs and guns. According to Deadline, the streaming service is in talks with Louis Leterrier (The TransporterThe Incredible HulkThe Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) to direct the film.

Despite the terrible reviews, Bright was definitely popular, managing to pull in 11 million viewers in its first three days of availability. It makes sense that Netflix would want a sequel.

Will Smith and Joel Edgerton will return to the roles of Daryl Ward and Nick Jakoby, a human and orc detective partnered up on the LAPD. David Ayer, who directed the first movie, is still on the team for this sequel, but won’t be as involved, since he’s busy working on Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros.

If Bright had one thing going for it, it’s the world where it’s set, which is very much like our own but chock-a-block with fantasy creatures. At times, the concept really worked. Ayer thinks a sequel could dive deeper into that world. “I think people felt like there was a lot of doorways to explore,” he told /Film. “People were like, ‘Tell us about the dragon. Tell us about this, the history.’ So it’s a very rich world and I think we’re going to drill down some more.”

There’s no release date for Bright 2 as of yet, and we hope they reconsider that title, or at least slap a subtitle on it. (Bright 2: Even Brighter.) However, you can watch Bright, which is streaming now on Netflix.
