Virtually appearing on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds dropped an update on the foul-mouthed mercenary’s future now that Fox Entertainment, the original home of the Deadpool movies, has been acquired Disney, home of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thus far, the MCU has stayed far away from the type of adult content the Deadpool films are famous for, leading some fans to wonder if we’ll see the Merc-With-A-Mouth in the MCU at all, and if we do, whether he’ll be watered down. What happens, Reynolds sees nothing but possibilities.
"I see infinite possibility in either version, you know? If Deadpool were to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think it would be explosive, and amazing, and what a sandbox to play in. If Deadpool continued to get to just do his own thing, and be his own thing, also just like infinite possibility … There’s a lot more story to tell, so we hope we get to do that soon."
Reynolds has a point either way. It would be hilarious to see Deadpool have run-ins with squeaky clean characters like Captain America, but on the flip side, the series has a strong identity of its own it might not benefit from getting integrated into the wider MCU. And when Deadpool does have crossovers, it should be on the franchise’s own terms:
In any case, given that the first two films earned a combined $1.5 billion at the box office, it’s guaranteed we’re going to see the further adventures of Deadpool in some form or another.
As for Reynolds, you can catch him soon enough in Free Guy, in which he plays a background character in a Grand Theft Auto-like video game who gains sentience. The film was originally set for a July release, but like many films, it’s been pushed back, in this case until December.
“I think it’s my favorite film that I’ve ever been a part of,” Reynolds said. “And that says a lot because I’ve spent half my life working on Deadpool.”
We miss movies.
