Disney is working on both a new National Treasure movie AND a TV show

Raise your hands if you were over-the-top obsessed with the National Treasure movies back in the day. You can’t see me, but both my hands are raised as high as possible. I, along with many of you, was sucked into the scavenger hunt that was National Treasure, starring none other than the future Tiger King himself, Nicolas Cage.

I never could get enough of the treasure hunt across the globe, and always yearned for more. It looks like my wish is Disney’s command! According to an interview with Collider, producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared that not only is another National Treasure movie scarring Cage in the works, but there’s also a series coming to Disney+, with a younger cast:

"We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast."

By the sound of it, the show is further along than the third movie. “The film version is being written right now,” Bruckheimer said. “The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

On the off-chance that you’ve been living under a rock, the National Treasure movies follow Cage’s character, Benjamin Franklin Gates, an expert historian who unravels America’s craziest hidden secrets.

If you haven’t seen the movies, I urge you to do so immediately. I promise it’s worth the wild ride, and will forever change your experience at American museums and famous landmarks. (I know some of you have tried to take a peek at the Liberty Bell — don’t deny it!)

I’m curious how a National Treasure series would fare without Cage and the rest of the cast, because they make the movies fun and exciting. There’s just something about the goofy nature of it all that makes it so appealing even all these years later.

I guess we’ll just have to hang tight for further updates, but it suffices to say, I am excited!
