Ryan Murphy is making an American Horror Story spinoff

American Horror Story is expanding, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. Sort of excited, sort of confused, sort of indifferent. In any case, this will mark the first time creator Ryan Murphy is making a spinoff of this particular series, and it sounds…intriguing.

Murphy dropped the news during a recent Zoom call with American Horror Story cast members, aka Murphy’s favorite people in the world. Like it or not, they’re likely all going to be in the spinoff series at some point, so it made sense to give them a heads up.

Murphy reveals that the spinoff, American Horror Stories (yes, very original) will consist of one-hour episodes. It sounds like each will stand on its own, meaning the show will have an anthology format. Some seasons of American Horror Story feel like they drag on only to conclude with a disappointing ending, so maybe this is a good move.

And there so many interest characters from across the seasons of the original show to explore. But I have a feeling Murphy will create something new for the series, because he’s Ryan Murphy and he already has 100 shows on TV. Clearly he has ideas.

But whether the stories are original or drawn from the existing AHS mythology, you can bet all your personal belongings that we’ll see the same familiar actors pop up. Murphy sticks to what he knows, and across all the shows he’s done, the cast is the connecting thread. And that’s fine with us. The more work people like Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates get, the better.

It remains to be seen when this new series would film or premiere; at the moment, American Horror Story is on pause like the rest of the television industry, and Murphy will likely finish shooting the tenth season of that show before diving into the spinoff anyway, but we’ll see.

Stay tuned for updates, we’ll bring them to you as we learn more!
