Fan edits the Night King into the end of Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones came to an end a year ago, setting off a storm of controversy the fandom is still sorting through. Without getting into all the nitty-gritty-bloody details, I think it’s safe to say that the show didn’t end in a way many fans were expecting. Who would have thought the Night King and his army of the dead would be dispatched halfway through the final season and that the climax to involve Daenerys Targaryen murdering thousands of innocent men, women and children?

Anyway, the one-year anniversary is as good a time as any to trot out some what-might-have-been ideas. The Twitter account @ArtofASOIAF just posted this very cool edit that showed what it might have looked like had the Night King made it all the way down to King’s Landing and attacked the city with Viserion, his ice dragon:

CERSEI, HE’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU! Quick alternate ending: Cersei is palming a Valyrian steel thumb tack and she jams the Night King right in the neck, becoming the most beloved ruler in Westerosi history. Twist!

I’m not endorsing the caption to the video, but I do get a little thrill watching it and imagining a different way the story could have gone. It’s just a shame there’s not more. Maybe at the two-year anniversary?
