And the cast continues to grow. The Hollywood Reporter has it that Timothy Olyphant will appear in the second season of The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars series.
This makes some sense. Olyphant is best known for playing a tough-as-nails lawman on HBO’s Deadwood and a different tough-as-nails lawman on FX’s Justified. The Mandalorian, which follows the title character he gun-slings his way across the Star Wars galaxy with his Baby Yoda under his arm, definitely has a western feel. If Olyphant is playing a tough-as-nails lawman on Tatooine or something, no one will be able to say it’s bad casting.
So far, the show has killed it when it comes to casting bit parts. The show is held down by Pedro Pascal in the title role, but the first season also featured the likes of Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Bill Burr, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito and Werner Herzog. Not all of them were onscreen for very long, but their roles all fit them like a glove. I’m sure showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have the perfect part for Olyphant.
That said, the galaxy far, far away is starting to feel a little crowded. Olyphant is just the latest in a long line of actors we’ve heard are coming aboard the series in its sophomore season, including:
- Rosario Dawson as fan favorite ex-Jedi Ahsoka Tano
- Battlestar Galactica veteran Katee Sackhoff as Mandalorian leader Bo-Katan
- Temuera Morrison, who played Jango in 2002’s Return of the Clones, as Boba Fett
And there are rumors of more Star Wars legacy characters coming aboard besides. Hopefully Olyphant is playing a new creation. We’ll find out when The Mandalorian season 2 premieres on Disney+ this October.
