Attack on Titan has been around in manga form for over a decade, but it really blew up when the anime came out in 2013, based on Hajime Isayama’s comic. The show is set in a terrifying world where humans must live behind massive walls lest they be eaten by the hungry hungry giants that live outside. We follow characters Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, members of the walled city’s Scout Regiment, which is charged with going outside the walls to take what land it can from the giants. But sometimes their mission can feel fruitless to the point of despair.
Attack on Titan is an exciting, moody, occasionally grotesque watch, but definitely memorable. And now it’s coming to an end.
Over the course of its first three seasons, the scope of the show widened considerably. We learned the origin of the titan threat, which is tied up with the ruling class of the walled city, an ancient conflict between powerful nations, and Eren’s own family. Eventually, Eren and some of his friends are able to turn into sentient titans themselves. That sets the stage for season 4, where it looks like the people of Paradis Island, where we’ve been this whole time, will take the fight to those who have kept them penned in for generations:
And I will never not be creeped out by the sight of the empty-eyed, open-mouths titans gunning for some fresh meat. Attack on Titan season 4 debuts sometime this fall.
