Richard Madden joins protests against police violence, other Game of Thrones alums show support

Over this past week, thousands of people across the United States (and elsewhere) marched to protest the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25. Some pretty big names have been among the demonstrators, including Tessa Thompson, Michael B. Jordan and Ariana Grande. And at least one Game of Thrones stepped out, as well: Richard Madden, aka Robb Stark, the King in the North.

Madden showed up with his friend, Teen Wolf star Froy Gutierrez, in Santa Monica. He shared a picture of himself on the move on his Instagram Stories:

Gutierrez also shared a quick video of the protest:

“[T]he peaceful protest in Santa Monica this afternoon. #BlackLivesMatter – Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd. Their lives matter. In order to end civil unrest, we must end the conditions that created it.”

Santa Monica did indeed have many peaceful protests, although others did turn more aggressive.

Tensions, in short, remain high, and I think a lot of people are still struggling through their feelings about all of this. What remains clear, however, is that the killing George Floyd was unconscionable and a reaction inevitable.

And although Madden was the only Game of Thrones veteran I could find that was marching with protesters, plenty of others were showing their support for the protests, and reaffirming that the conditions that led to them had to be changed. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) posted a tribute to some of the black and women killed over just the past couple of months, and directed people towards the Minnesota Freedom Fund if they were interested in donating:

Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon) also directed people to somewhere they can donate to help fight injustice:

John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) shared video of a particularly inspiring protester:

Nathalie Emmaneul (Missandei) broke things down:

And Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) and Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) put it simply:

Stay safe out there, everyone.
