Daredevil fans renew efforts to get Disney to bring back cancelled Netflix series
By Corey Smith
In 2018, Netflix began cancelling its slate of Marvel dramas, beginning with Iron Fist and Luke Cage before moving on to Daredevil, The Punisher and finally Jessica Jones. Thanks to a carefully written clause in the contracts, Walt Disney and Marvel were forbidden from using any of the characters until two years after their cancellation. Now, the fan movement Save Daredevil is here to remind us all that only six months remains in that two-year window.
Technically, Disney regains the rights to Iron Fist and Luke Cage in September, but as the first (and arguably best) of the Marvel Netflix shows, there is understandably more excitement about hte potential return of Daredevil. Of course, the major caveat is that just because Marvel and Disney could make a Daredevil show doesn’t mean they will, to say nothing of making one with the same cast from the Netflix drama: Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Vincent D’Onofrio as the Kingpin, and so on
Personally, I think a revamped series could work rather well on the burgeoning streaming platform. Daredevil and its companion series always had lower stakes than the big-screen Avengers movies, for example, and it could be fun to see those adventures continue on a new home. Bringing back the entire original cast seems like a long shot, but Charlie Cox did have the part down rather well. Either way, hopefully Marvel doesn’t leave the street-level characters on the sidelines for too long; they always made for an interesting change of pace.
