Spider-Man: Far From Home had plenty of surprises in store for Marvel fans, particuarly at the very end of the movie, but none were quite as satisfying as seeing J.K. Simmons return to the role of J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker’s irascible boss at The Daily Bugle.

Or at least, Simmons is traditionally Parker’s boss, although it looks like the new series with Tom Holland is going in a different direction.

As Jameson, Simmons was a fan favorite in the early 2000s-era, Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films. Not much has carried over from those movies, but I guess he was just too good to leave behind. In the new films, it looks like Jameson will be taking on a role similar to the one he has in the video game Marvel’s Spider-Man for the Playstation 4, where he’s less a cantankerous newsman and more an Alex Jones-type shock pundit.

Given Simmons’ enthusiasm for the role, it’s hard to picture anyone else playing Jameson, so fans were thrilled to see the MCU had reenlisted him to appear in Far From Home. And there’s more good news on that front: Simmons told Entertainment Weekly that he’s signed on to reprise the role in more Spider-Man movies in the future.

According to Simmons, the contract he signed doesn’t require the studio use him. But if Marvel does call, he’s game to come back. And it’s hard to imagine why the creatives behind future Spider-Man films wouldn’t want Simmons onboard, especially now that Peter’s been outed to the public. People are sure to be on a witch-hunt for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man after Mysterio’s trickery, and who better than Simmons to lead that mob?

Bad press has long played a part in Spider-Man’s comic history, and it’s easy to see how it could factor into the MCU, giving Peter just another thing to worry about outside of saving people and honoring Tony Stark’s legacy.

As for when we can expect to see the next Spider-Man installment, Marvel recently announced it had pushed the upcoming film from a July 16, 2021 release date to November 5, 2021. We’ll find out then if the studio decided to capitalize on its contract with Simmons. (Fingers crossed it does!)
