If you’ve watched Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, you probably remember the ending scene with an unnamed Force-sensitive boy — who later became known as Broom Boy — watch as the Millennium Falcon burst into Hyperspace.
It was a quiet, inspirational moment indicating that anyone could use the Force, not just characters related to people we had already met. It looked like Broom Boy’s inclusion was symbolic of the idea that anyone could be strong, but fans still started to wonder if we were looking at a new character who would recur in future movies.
Unfortunately, Broom Boy was a no-show in The Rise of Skywalker, although the thought that his story might continue did cross actor Temirlan Blaev’s mind. “I wasn’t sure because it could have been, yes, he would’ve continued my story, how Rey would have trained me or helped me in some way,” Blaev mused during an interview on Jamie Stangroom’s YouTube Channel. “But then at the same time, am I really that important? Am I someone big or am I really just a boy, a lucky boy in a galaxy far, far away?”
"A lot of people were asking me [about returning], and I said, ‘We’ll have to wait and see if I get called back. But I guess I kind of understand why it happened."
If someone at Star Wars does want to continue Broom Boy’s story in the the future, the actor is down to reprise his role. “There could be a chance to actually continue the story of the character. I think it could happen. Yeah, I would be up for it.”
And it’s not like there are a lack of Star Wars projects where Broom Boy might be able to make an appearance. There’s a movie trilogy in development from Rian Johnson, who guy who dreamt up Broom Boy in the first place, there’s an upcoming movie from Taika Waititi, and a bunch of TV shows in the works. With the rate at which they’re announcing new ones, Broom Boy could probably get one of his own.
I hope we can see Temirlan Blaev appear in Star Wars again. To me, it really felt as if they were setting him up for something in the final scene of The Last Jedi. Let’s keep our fingers that they have plans to bring him back in the future.
Oh, and even though he’s become known as Broom Boy, the character does have a name: Temiri Blagg, a take on the actor’s real name. See, that’s one step already taken.
