We’ve got some bad news for Star Wars fans: the 2020 Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and rescheduled for August of 2022. This is a smart decision by Celebration officials, as the event usually draws thousands of fans who cram into rooms shoulder to shoulder hoping to be the first to see an announcement of the next big Star Wars project.

“[T]he health and safety of our fans, attendees, exhibitors, guests, and staff is always our number one priority,” reads the official announcement. “Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 virus and in speaking with local and state authorities on the latest public health guidelines related to indoor conventions, we have made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020.”

If you purchased tickets for the 2020 Celebration, you can receive a refund or convert the tickets into Star Wars Celebration merchandise. Or, if so you choose, you can transfer the tickets for use on the 2020 date, and get an exclusive Stormtrooper pin for your trouble. “The ticket refund and merchandise credit request period will open on Monday June 22nd and must be completed by August 26th, 2020,” the statement continues.” Additionally, if you’ve booked a hotel in the official room block through our housing portal, your reservation will automatically be canceled. Please remember to adjust any additional travel arrangements you may have.”

You’ve got to wonder if a first-look trailer for The Mandalorian season 2 would have been shown the Celebration, or maybe something about the Cassian Andor Rogue One prequel or the Obi-Wan Kenobi mini-series starring Ewan McGregor. Who knows? Maybe we would even have gotten something about what Star Wars movie Taika Waititi is working on.

But obviously cancellation was the right call. And maybe we’ll get trailers or other announcements elsewhere. That way, millions of fans can join in the fun at once rather than hundreds who get to see it in person.
