Why Hugh Jackman never wore the classic Wolverine suit from the comics
By Ashley Hurst
We never got to see Hugh Jackman don the iconic yellow-and-black Wolverine suit in the X-Men movies, although it did show up at least once.
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will without a doubt go down as one of the best portrayals of a comic book character from any Marvel/DC movie franchise. In every X-Men movie he appeared in, Jackman really brought his very best, displaying all the raw emotion and brute strength that the character demands. However, one thing we never saw him do was donning Wolverine’s iconic yellow-and-black suit from the comics, but we did come close to seeing it once.
In a Quarantine Watch Party of Logan hosted by ComicBook.com, director James Mangold touched on why Jackman never wore the iconic suit. “We never even made a version of the outfit,” he tweeted. “Everything about his character as I understand it, would keep him from donning a self promoting ‘uniform.'”
However, there’s always a chance the next actor to play Wolverine might get the chance to show us what the suit looks like in live action. “I’m sure the next incarnation of the Wolverine will go there.”
However, this doesn’t mean that Jackman never came close to trying on the suit. It made an appearance in The Wolverine, the one where Logan jets off to Tokyo to say his goodbyes to Yashida. In a deleted scene where Logan and Yukio are on a private jet ready to fly to Tokyo, Logan opens a briefcase that contains his classic suit. What a tease!
And you may remember Cyclops making a crack about Wolverine’s comic book outfit in the very first X-Men movie:
Speaking of Jackman’s more subdued movie outfits, one of the guys responsible for designing them was hired by Elon Musk to create spacesuits for his private space transportation company SpaceX. Seriously.
According to The New York Times, SpaceX hired Jose Fernandez to work on the prototype for these suits. Fernandez has worked on costumes for a wide range of movies, working with heroes such as Wolverine, Thor, Batman and Wonder Woman.
You definitely get a Hollywood vibe from these suits. But of course the important thing is for the suit to function perfectly in space, and you hope the bulk of the work went into the technical side of things.
But hey, if the SpaceX astronauts ever feel like wearing functional yellow-and-black spacesuits with retractable claws, we won’t complain.
