Stranger Things 4 to have “cool” guest stars—What ’80s icons will turn up?
Production on Stranger Things 4 may be on hold thanks to the coronavirus, but it’s still one of Netflix’s most-anticipated upcoming seasons — and series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been keeping the momentum going by teasing what’s to come, even if fans won’t get to see them for a while.
For example, speaking with Deadline, the brothers revealed that they have a general idea of how they want the whole series to end. They also suggested that season 4 will have some exciting new guest stars. “We have some cool ones … we have a couple cool ones this year,” Matt Duffer said. “It’s a really fun way to get to meet one of your icons, you know? Write a part for them and see if they want to do it.”
Stranger Things has already had a lot of cool guest stars, many of them drawn from the ’80s movies that are such a huge influence on the show. We’ve had Paul Reiser (Aliens, Beverly Hills Cop) as a well-meaning scientist, Sean Astin (The Goonies) as the heroic RadioShack employee Bob Newby, and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) as the mayor of Hawkins, the small Indiana town where most of the show’s monster-fighting story happens. And of course, the show has ’80s movie queen Winona Ryder in a main role as Joyce Byers. The Duffers “grew up watching and loving” these actors, and getting to work with them is “surreal.”
And what other ’80s icons might show up? The Duffers didn’t give any details, but we have some suggestions:
- Rob Lowe (The Outsiders, St. Elmo’s Fire) as a guidance counselor at Hawkins Middle School who helps the kids identify which colleges they want to aim for.
- Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles) as a local mom whose kid bonds with the Dustin, Max, Lucas and Mike when they all get detention.
- Tom Cruise (Risky Business, Top Gun) as a former fighter pilot keen to tell everyone of the danger the Soviets pose to the American way of life.
- Sigourney Weaver (Aliens, Ghostbusters) as a CIA agent working to get Sheriff Hopper out of the Soviet Union.
You’re welcome, Netflix.
For viewers, it’s certainly fun to see big names from other franchises pop up in Hawkins, even if they don’t stick around for very long. It’ll be fun to speculate on who might play a role in the new season. Just put it on the pile of questions we have about the mysteries of season 4:
