It’s the pirate’s life for Margot Robbie, who is setting down her Harley Quinn mallet to set sail in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Now before you start trying to connect the dots between the past movies or start wondering if Johnny Depp will show up as a cameo in the film, let me stop you. This new movie, written by Birds of Prey’s Christina Hodson, will be a female-centric take on the story. I mean, isn’t this what we’ve been waiting for? We all loved Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, but this is going to blow all of that out of the water, literally.
If anything, we should be secretly hoping that Kiera Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann makes an appearance. Now that would be something I’d be on board for, although this seems like it’s gonna be a whole new story. The movie will feature a new slate of characters who will explore other corners of the Pirates world.
By the way, this movie is also separate from the previously announced reboot that Pirates of the Caribbean writer Ted Elliot and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin are working on. As much as I like the idea of an all-female Pirates movie, I do worry the franchise is taking on more water than it can handle, so to speak. So I’ll just focus on how pumped I am to see Margot Robbie cut loose. From Tanya Harding to Harley Quinn, she has the chops to do pretty much whatever she wants.
We don’t know much more at the moment, but Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson coming together for this project is no surprise. They looked like they had a ton of fun working on Birds of Prey together, and just last year they started an incredible initiative called Lucky Exports Pitch Program, which focuses on getting studios to hire more female writers for action-centric movies. How great is that?
I don’t know about all of you, but I cannot wait to see what this movie brings to the table, even though I’m afraid that the franchise is going to oversaturate itself. But with Margot Robbie at the masthead, I think it just might be worth the watch.
