Christopher Nolan doesn’t allow chairs on set and the internet has thoughts
By Ariba Bhuvad
The world woke up this morning to some interesting news about Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar and more. She and Hugh Jackman were interviewing each other for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” segment, and Hathaway had some behind-the-scenes tidbits to reveal about Christopher Nolan, with whom she’d worked on both The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.
Apparently, the directors doesn’t allow chairs or cell phones on his sets. I guess I get the cell phones thing, because it’s a distraction but…no chairs? What’s the deal? Here’s how Hathaway explains it:
"Chris also doesn’t allow chairs. I worked with him twice. He doesn’t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working. I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing."
Naturally, this factoid exploded on Twitter, with lots of folk reacting indignantly, hilariously, and everything in between.
Let’s start with indignation. You all remember that Anne Hathway was Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, right. If there were no chairs, does that mean she was standing up the whole time…in those shoes?
Looks like Robert Pattinson is breaking both rules on the set of Tenet. Someone report him!
Bill Corbett of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame remembered a prank for the ages. Could you imagine the horror on Nolan’s face if he walked into this?
Of all the tweets I’ve seen so far, this next definitely makes my top five:
Chairs deserve rights too, Christopher Nolan!
I don’t think many of us have ever heard of a “no chairs” policy, but the “no cell phone” policy is certainly a thing. Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter reveled that directors Greta Gerwig, Quentin Tarantino and Noah Baumbach don’t allow phones on set. In fact, Tarantino has a booth where the cast and crew can check their phones.
Pretty genius, I’d say! Can you imagine if you’re trying to film a pivotal scene and you get a text or some breaking celebrity news regarding yourself?
I’m not sure how I’m feeling about the “no chairs” policy, though. Nolan is a genius, but shouldn’t the people working with him be able to rest their legs at some point? What about people with physical disabilities?
