Jason Momoa to play Frosty the Snowman in new live-action movie

Jason Momoa became a household name with Game of Thrones, where he played the fierce warlord Khal Drogo. His star rose further when he was cast as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, even getting his own solo movie. But now, Warner Bros. and Stampede Ventures are giving him the role he was born to play: Frosty the Snowman.

But more badass.

Yes, Momoa will be playing the iconic snowman who’s brought to life by a magical hat. Or maybe the snow was magic, or maybe he was in the hearts of the children the whole time; I haven’t seen the movie yet.

The film will be part live-action and part CGI, with Momoa providing the voice for Frosty, according to Deadline. That’s a little disappointing, because I was hoping they would make up Jason Momoa in snowman makeup complete with button nose. Hopefully he’ll at least get into a mo-cap suit to spread Christmas cheer around the set.

Obviously this is a pretty funny story on its surface — it’s fun to picture Momoa, known for playing fearsome roles, doing something this wholesome — but my absolutely favorite part are the statements from producers. Here’s what screenwriter David Berenbaum said about it:

"From his role as a fearsome count in a land of ice and fire to the oceanic success we all had with Aquaman, it felt only right to realize Jason this time out of snow."

Okay, so I’m pretty sure the end of that sentence makes no grammatical sense, but get of the first part: he describes Khal Drogo as “a fearsome count in a land of ice and fire.” A count? That’s what Drogo was this entire time? How did I miss it?

And producer Greg Silverman had this to say: “We know Jason’s as a true human being filled with love, compassion and a deep connection to ohana — all of which is the living spirit of Xmas and Frosty.”

“Ohana” is the Hawaiian term for “family,” Momoa having been born on Honolulu. That’s actually fair enough, although when I think “snowman,” my first through isn’t of Hawaii.

Anyway, Jason Momoa is playing Frosty the Snowman. 2020 isn’t all bad.
