Zack Snyder: Ray Fisher’s Cyborg is “the heart” of his Justice League

There’s been a lot of drama swirling lately around Ray Fisher, Joss Whedon, and Justice League. To catch you up, the other day, Fisher — who played Cyborg in the movie — accursed Joss Whedon — who was brought in to finish directing the film after original director Zack Snyder had to leave due to a family emergency — of “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” behavior on set.

We don’t have the details, but we do know that Cyborg wasn’t really a major part of the finished theatrical cut. Now that HBO Max is gearing up to release “the Snyder Cut,” a version of the movie that will preserve Snyder’s original vision, fans are speculating about how it might be different, and have dug up comments from Snyder that Ray Fisher is “the heart” of the movie he made:

It’s true that Justice League barely scratched the surface of Cyborg, aka Victor Stone. Granted, that sort of in-depth character digging usually happens in a standalone movie, but the rest of the characters definitely had more screen time than him. And Fisher’s Cyborg is the only Justice League team member to have neither his own solo movie already out or in the pipeline, so he probably needed the development more than most.

Snyder’s comments about Fisher being “the heart” of the movie (which he’s made on multiple occasions, by the way) predate Fisher’s accusations against Joss Whedon. So far, we haven’t heard new comments from Whedon, Snyder, or any of other Justice League cast members on the matter. It feels like there’s a lot going on under the surface, so we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out

In any case, I’m hoping that the Snyder Cut will do justice (geddit?) to Cyborg’s arc in a way that Whedon’s version of the movie didn’t. I’ve always loved reading the Cyborg comics, and I feel like his story is extremely relatable. There’s a lot to unpack with the Stone family, and based on interviews and sneak peeks that have come out over the years, it seems like we’ll be getting a lot of that in the Snyder Cut.

And then we can get a standalone movie exploring who Victor Stone was before he became Cyborg and we’ll be on our way.
