15. Dragonlance

If we’re discussing books about dragons, we’re not likely to find a deeper, longer, and more “classic fantasy” series than Dragonlance. These novels by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss began as a way to tell the backstory to a set of Dungeons & Dragons game modules, but Dragonlance has since grown into its own thing, with over a hundred novels and short story anthologies to its name.

With all that material, Dragonlance can be a smidge intimidating to begin. The best place to start is generally regarded to be the Dragonlance Chronicles and Dragonlance Legends trilogies, which make up the “core” Dragonlance story. These books feature some of the series’ most iconic characters, like the mage Raistlin Majere.

The first of these, the Chronicles trilogy, follows a group of companions who reunite after five years spent on far-flung quests. When the companions arrive at the village where they agreed to meet, they find it overrun with religious fanatics. Thus begins an epic quest to restore the faith of the world of Krynn, which is beset by dwarves, half-dragon-half-human warriors called draconians, mages, undead, centaurs, and just about every other fantasy creature you can think of. And of course, dragons are a huge part of the series as well, whether as foes or friends.

Given the sheer size and sheer scope of this series, it’s pretty safe to say that If you wanted to read about dragons until you were as ancient as Smaug, Dragonlance is probably your best bet.
